This week, I have a brief introduction and a few discussion questions to help us prepare for the sermon on Sunday. Read below and discuss the questions with your family, friends, Sunday School class, or whoever else between now and Sunday.

In Charlie Brown’s Christmas, Charlie Brown’s sister Sally dictates a message to Santa Claus, buttering him up by asking him about his summer, and inquiring after the health of his wife. Then she explains that she’s been “extra good” this year and therefore she has a long and detailed list. Particularly, she wants Santa to note the color of each item. If it’s too difficult to get it right, she will of course be happy with cash. When Charlie Brown expresses concern at her materialism, she explains: “All I want is what I have coming to me. All I want is my fair share.”

Isn’t that the way the world works? We’ve done the hard work of doing good, or the harder work of being good, so we should get what’s coming to us. It can be easy to fall into this kind of thinking with God, but we have to be careful about thinking we’ve earned God’s favor or mercy.

This Sunday our text will come from Luke 7:1-10 and our sermon title is “You Can’t Put That on Your Resumé.”

In the comments and in discussion at home and on the phone, I invite you to think about the following questions:

Why do you do good things for people?

When someone does something good for you, do you feel obligated to do anything in return?
